SPIDERMAN
Growing up in the late ’80s and early ’90s, Spider-Man comics were a familiar part of my world – especially thanks to my grandmother’s bookshelf, which was filled with them. These stories introduced me to ideas of good and evil, and to the impulse to do what is right — early lessons in what heroism might look like, even if only on a subconscious level.
The strong visual expression developed by the artists at Marvel Comics Group forms the basis of this project. I selected three comic-book frames and translated them into large-scale oil paintings that could correspond to the key narrative sequence:
The initial heroic impulse
The moment of confrontation
The act of rescue
The works were produced between 2008 and 2009, and reflect an interest in how visual storytelling shapes our understanding of heroic roles and actions.
